Do magnets act on tiny particles invisible to the naked eye to repel or attract things?
The foundational theory here is that in general you need to make contact to push or pull something when there’s space between you and that something. Put it another way,

Magnets still work in a vacuum. The force itself isn’t carried by a particle – but comes about because of the movement of charged particles, either as the result of current in a conductor or because of the quantum effects of an electrons spin and (to a lesser extent) its orbital motion around the nuclei of an atom.
The key thing to remember with magnetism is that it’s a FIELD force – any time a magnetic effect comes into play, there’s a FIELD that emanates from the point of origin out into space. There’s something called permativity constant, which is used in physics equations to determine how much of an effect the field will have at a specific distance from the origin.
It was discovered sometime way-back-when that the electric force and magnetic force are really fundamentally the same thing – So you’ll often hear talk about electromagnetism, and occasionally hear mention of it being one of the four fundamental forces in nature – the others being the ’strong’ nuclear force (which is responsible for holding together atomic nuclei) the ‘weak’ nuclear force, which is responsible for some effects of atomic decay, and gravitation – which, well, keeps you planted in front of the PC.
There is much work being done by physicists to reconcile the four forces and understand how they work together. The interactions of the Strong, Weak, and Electromagnetic forces are fairly well understood in current theoretical models … but gravity doesn’t play nice with the rest.
