Going into high school? A very challenging one?

I am going to a magnet high school next school year and am quite concerned about some things.

First of all, I have never attended a magnet school before. Second of all, this school gives 6 or more hours of homework every night. And third of all the school expects us to be leaders and go beyond just the bare minimum.

The reason I got in this school were my state test scores and grades. Except they their school is NOT about getting good grades, but rather giving your best and COMMITTING yourself. So basically, if a 70 is the best you can do, then so be it.

This will be hard for me as in 8th grade id be annoyed at 1 hour of homework, and never studied like I should have. But I have BIG plans for my career and I realize those days are long gone.

Anyways my question is, how can I find the determination to put my best forward and persevere? Also, how can I make a GOOD impression?

I’m pretty sure the “6+ hours of homework” is a lie. There is no way that any high school, with an assumed average of six classes per day, can cover enough material in a day to require an hour or more of homework for every class each night. Even in the IB program (look it up), my homework per class averaged out to around 30 minutes per night. That means there were nights when I had no homework for a class, and nights when I had a huge project to do for a class, but on average it worked out to be around 30-45 minutes per class. With six classes, that’s about 3 or 4 hours, not 6 or more.

You pretty much answered your own question: just try your best. You’ve started recognizing where your problems lie as a student, that’s good. Keep analyzing yourself like that, work to eliminate the bad habits that keep you from realizing your potential. As long as you’re clearly making a concerted effort, you should be fine no matter what your grades are.
