Regional and racial differences between SAT scores?
I rank # 20 in my class 2008. It’s a magnet school, predominantly hispanic and we center on Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice. I am also a hispanic. This school is located in Houston Tx. I received a 1590 on my SAT scores and many people tell me that it is a good score and above average. The thing is that ive done searches on the internet and on yahoo answers about good and not so good scores. And I found that yahoo answerers were answering that a score of 1860 was okay but not stelar. Another thing is that I scored a few points more than the last year’s graduating class of 2007’s valedictorian! I heard my english teacher talking about how the main determinant of SAT scores is income, and that just blew my mind. So rich kids are getting better attention in school, they go to private schools? They pay for very expensive SAT lessons? What is it? Is it that we have fallen victim to this? Or what’s going on here? Are we just not that good at problem solving? I’d really like to know.
This response might sound offensive. i don’t intend it to be–I’m just answering the question as best I can.
Well, it is true that Latinos and African Americans have lower SAT scores (on AVERAGE) then most of the other races. Again, that probably is due to the income gap. However, since this is the case, Latinos and African Americans will get a boost in the admissions process in college (like, they won’t need quite as high an SAT score or the same level of classes, since they don’t have access to the hard classes or to the SAT prep classes). I think this is somewhat unfair since there can be some poor white and poor Asian kids who won’t get any boost in the admissions process, even though they go to the same quality schools that the poor African American and the poor Latinos attend. Also, some middle and upper class minorities still get the boost, even though they shouldn’t need it if there parents are making a lot of money and have the enrolled in good schools and can pay for their SAT lessons. Basically, I think any boosts in the college admissions process should be based on economic status alone.
But the fact that richer people do better cannot be attributed solely to the fact that they they can pay for lessons for the SAT test or go to private schools (in fact, only about 10% of the student population does go to private schools, and many of these people go to parochial schools, many of which aren’t as good as the public schools). The richer people have usually been in households where the parents heavily emphasize education (as most of the rich parents are college educated), so the students may work harder in school and get better grades. Since they value school more, ultimately they get better SAT test scores. They also may live in better school districts (here I overgeneralize, since there are lots of poor African Americans in my own school that is in the top 3% of public high schools), so they can go to better public schools (and, in the case of the really rich, excellent private schools). They get a good (or at least acceptable) education, so they may not need to study for the SAT. In fact, I come from a middle class family, and I attended a magnet school. Most of the students got outstanding scores without even studying for the SAT, since we have been working our butts off so long in the hard classes. So between parents’ emphasis on education and (in some cases) the better schools they attend, the middle and upper class students may outperform other students on standardized tests.
I am just generalizing the situation–it doesn’t apply to every person. I might not have even hit all the many things that are confounded with the variable of income. I’m not saying that poor people or racial minorities aren’t good at problem solving.
There is no simple answer to this problem about education.
A 1590 isn’t really a great score for any race, but it’s not that bad either. I am sure you can improve upon it if you study SAT prep book(s).
